How can I practice a US visa interview for free?

You can practice a US visa interview for free by reading the State Department's visa pages, asking EducationUSA or your school's international office about visa sessions if you're a student, and having a friend play the officer with real questions for your visa. Some AI tools also let you start free, as their own sites say. Recording yourself on your phone works too.

Here's what each free option gives you, a simple way to practice on your own, and where to find the questions officers ask.

What free information does the US government publish?

The State Department's visa pages don't run practice interviews, but they tell you what the interview checks, which is where good practice starts.

  • The student visa page on travel.state.gov says a consular officer will interview you to decide whether you qualify, and may ask for evidence of your academic preparation, your intent to leave the US after your program, and your ability to pay for school, living and travel costs.
  • The visitor visa page on travel.state.gov covers B1/B2 visas: how to apply, what to bring, and a note that applicants must qualify based on their ties to their home country, rather than assurances from family and friends in the US.
  • Study in the States, run by the Department of Homeland Security, has a short 2018 "Prepare for Your Visa Interview" page for students with the documents to bring to the interview.
  • Your embassy or consulate's website has the country-specific steps, which can differ from one embassy to another.

Turn each item into a question you could be asked. Since the officer may want evidence that you'll leave after your program, practice saying, in one sentence, what you'll do and where. Our US visa interview tips cover the documents and the day itself.

Can students get free help from EducationUSA?

EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 400 international student advising centers in more than 170 countries. The US Embassy in Lithuania, for example, describes EducationUSA advising as free, in person and online, and lists the student visa process and preparing for departure among the topics advisers cover. What each center offers varies, so ask your nearest one whether it runs visa information sessions or mock interviews. You can find it through the US embassy website for your country.

Does your university run mock visa interviews?

Ask your school's international student office whether it holds visa information sessions or mock interviews for admitted students. Check its web pages or email the office that issued your I-20 or DS-2019. Your school's advisers know your program, which helps with questions like "Why this university?"

How do you practice with a friend?

A friend or family member can play the officer for free. It works best when they ask real questions and push back.

  1. Give them 10 to 15 questions for your visa from our F-1, B1/B2 or H-1B guide, mixed up so you can't predict the order.
  2. Ask them to stand or sit across a table and keep the whole interview to about 3 minutes.
  3. Ask them to follow up on whatever you say with "Why?", "How do you know?" or "Who is paying?" the way an officer would.
  4. Ask them to stop you when an answer runs past two sentences or sounds unsure.
  5. Swap roles once. Asking the questions shows you how a vague answer sounds from the other side.

Which AI mock visa interview tools have a free start?

Some AI tools say on their own sites that you can try them free. As of October 30, 2026:

  • Permito lists a "Free forever" plan with 1 mock interview, and says no credit card is needed (permito.ai).
  • PrepKind says "Your first session is free" (prepkind.com).
  • Visaz says one free practice minute is included (visaz.app).
  • MockVisa invites you to try it for free on its home page (mockvisa.com).

Free starts and prices change, so check each site before you sign up. Our MockVisa alternatives page and our AI visa interview practice comparison compare what each tool does.

Visaful is an AI mock interview app for US visa interviews: an AI officer asks your visa's questions out loud and shows what to fix.

How do you practice a visa interview on your own?

You don't need anyone else to start. This method takes about 20 minutes a day and uses only your phone.

  1. Pick your questions. Choose 10 questions for your visa from our US visa interview questions guide. Include the ones you'd least like to hear.
  2. Write facts, not a script. Next to each question, note the true facts your answer needs: names, numbers, dates and places. Check every number against your DS-160.
  3. Answer out loud and record it. Read a question, then answer in one or two sentences without looking at your notes.
  4. Play it back. Mark any answer that runs long, gives a range instead of a number, uses words like "maybe" or "I think," or doesn't match your DS-160.
  5. Ask yourself the follow-up. After each answer, ask "Why?" or "How?" and answer that too. An officer may ask the next question based on what you just said.
  6. Repeat the weak ones. The next day, start with the answers you marked and shuffle the order.

Don't memorize word-for-word answers. A follow-up question breaks a memorized script fast. Know your facts well enough to say them in your own words.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free mock visa interview?

Yes. You can practice free with a friend or by recording yourself using real questions for your visa. Students can ask EducationUSA or their school's international office about visa sessions. Some AI tools, including Permito and PrepKind, say on their own sites that your first mock or session is free.

Does the US embassy offer mock visa interviews?

The State Department's visa pages and embassy websites explain who needs an interview, how to apply and what to bring, but they don't offer practice interviews. Students can ask an EducationUSA advising center about visa preparation sessions.

Can I practice a visa interview alone?

Yes. Pick 10 real questions for your visa, answer each out loud in one or two sentences, record yourself and play it back. Mark long, unsure or inconsistent answers and repeat them the next day.

Should I memorize answers for my visa interview?

No. Learn your facts, not a script. Officers may ask follow-up questions based on what you say, so you need to explain your plans, your money and your ties in your own words, in line with your DS-160.

How long should my visa interview answers be?

Short. Aim for one or two sentences that answer the question directly with a real fact, such as a name, a number or a date. If the officer wants more, they'll ask.
