What is the F-1 visa?

The US student visa for academic study at a school approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

Who needs it
International students coming to study at a SEVP-approved US school.
Before you apply
Your school registers you in SEVIS and issues a Form I-20. You pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
Timing
It can be issued up to 365 days before your program starts. You can enter up to 30 days before.
Where
At the US embassy or consulate where you live. Applying elsewhere can make it harder to qualify.
Interview
In person with a consular officer. Fingerprints are usually taken the same day.

The F-1 interview

The officer has your DS-160 and I-20 information and only a few minutes, so answers should be short, specific and match your forms.

What happens

  1. 1Expect questions on why this school and major, who pays, your past studies and your plans after graduation.
  2. 2Under INA 214(b) every student applicant is presumed to intend to immigrate until they show otherwise.
  3. 3So the officer listens for a real student with a real plan, the money to finish it, and a life that points back home.
  4. 4Your DS-160, I-20 and social media should tell the same story.
  5. 5Interviews can often be held in English or the local language.

Why F-1 visas are refused

  • 214(b): the officer isn't convinced you're a genuine student who will return home.
  • Fuzzy money: ranges instead of numbers, or a sponsor whose income doesn't fit the cost.
  • Not knowing your own school or program, or talking about US jobs before study.
  • Answers that don't match your DS-160 or I-20.
  • 221(g): a missing document or administrative processing. It isn't a final refusal.
