H-1B stamping in the USA: is stateside visa renewal open?

Can you get your H-1B visa stamped without leaving the US? Not right now. As of October 30, 2026, the State Department has no open program for H-1B stamping in the USA. Its only domestic visa renewal pilot took applications from January 29 to April 1, 2024, and that pilot's web page now returns "Page Not Found." Stamping happens at a US embassy or consulate abroad.

That also rules out the old shortcut of a quick drop-off abroad for most people. H-1B renewals aren't on the State Department's interview waiver list, and it warns that applying outside your home country can be harder. Below is what each option looks like today, dated, with the page it comes from.

Can you get H-1B stamping in the USA right now?

No, as of October 30, 2026. Here's what we checked that day:

  • The domestic renewal page is gone. The travel.state.gov address the 2024 pilot used for applications returned "404 - Page Not Found."
  • No newer announcement. A search of the State Department newsroom for "domestic renewal" found two visa items, from December 2023 and January 2024, both about the 2024 pilot. Nothing later.
  • No newer Federal Register notice. A Federal Register search for State Department documents on domestic or H-1B visa renewal turned up the December 21, 2023 pilot notice and nothing after it.
  • The temporary worker page doesn't mention it. The State Department's page for H-1B and other work visas says "The same visa application process applies for first-time applicants and renewals," and points renewals to the embassy or consulate where you'll apply.

So, for now, getting a new H-1B visa means a trip to a US embassy or consulate abroad. If you see stateside stamping described as open, check the date: the only program so far was the 2024 pilot. Before you plan around any program, check that it's on the State Department's own site.

What was the 2024 domestic visa renewal pilot?

On December 21, 2023, the State Department announced it would process domestic visa renewals for certain H-1B workers "for the first time in nearly two decades." It said it had stopped domestic renewal of most nonimmigrant visas in 2004, mainly because of requirements in a 2002 border security law, including fingerprints.

The pilot was small and tightly drawn. The announcement and its Federal Register notice set these limits:

  • Dates: applications from January 29 to April 1, 2024, for about 20,000 people. Slots opened weekly, about 2,000 for each of the two missions.
  • H-1B only. The notice says H-4 dependents and other visa types were left out of the pilot.
  • Where the old visa came from: your previous H-1B visa had to be issued by Mission Canada from January 1, 2020, through April 1, 2023, or by Mission India from February 1, 2021, through September 30, 2021.
  • Interview waiver and fingerprints: you had to qualify for a waiver of the in-person interview and have ten fingerprints on file from an earlier visa.
  • Status: an approved, unexpired H-1B petition, most recently admitted in H-1B status, and maintaining that status in the US.
  • Fee: the $205 visa application fee, not refunded if you didn't qualify. Applicants subject to a reciprocity fee were left out.

Anyone outside those limits couldn't apply domestically. The notice told them to apply at a US embassy or consulate overseas instead.

Why does stateside renewal depend on the interview waiver?

Because there's no interview room in the US. The pilot notice says the State Department "does not conduct in-person nonimmigrant visa interviews or collect fingerprints domestically," so a key requirement was qualifying for a waiver of the in-person interview.

The waiver rules have changed since then. In 2023 the notice said most H-1B renewals within 48 months of the old visa's expiration could qualify. The State Department's interview waiver update of September 18, 2025, in force since October 1, 2025, narrowed the list. Its renewal exceptions are B-1, B-2 and B1/B2 visas and H-2A visas. H-1B isn't on it.

We found no State Department statement about what this means for any future domestic program. If one is announced, its own requirements will be the ones that count.

Is there an H-1B dropbox in 2026?

Generally no. "Dropbox" is the everyday name for the interview waiver: you drop off your passport and papers instead of attending an interview. Under the September 18, 2025 update, nearly all nonimmigrant applicants need an in-person interview. The exceptions are diplomatic and international organization visas, B-1, B-2 and B1/B2 renewals and H-2A renewals, each with conditions.

The US visa appointment service for India matched that on October 30, 2026. Its interview waiver page listed B-1, B-2 and B1/B2 renewals plus diplomatic and government travelers, and nothing for H-1B. It also says applicants "MUST be present in India" when they submit a waiver application, so it isn't a mail-in option from the US.

Even for people who qualify, the State Department says "Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis for any reason." The full rules and the 2025 timeline are in our interview waiver guide.

Can you get H-1B stamping in Canada or Mexico instead?

You can book outside your home country, but the State Department's instructions point you home. Its instructions on where to apply, in a newsroom notice dated July 15, 2026, say nonimmigrant applicants "should schedule their visa interview appointments at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality or residence." The same notice says:

  • You must show residence in the country where you apply, if you're applying there based on residence.
  • It may be harder to qualify. Applicants who book outside their country of nationality or residence "might find that it will be more difficult to qualify for the visa."
  • Fees don't carry over. Fees for those applications "will not be refunded and cannot be transferred."
  • Waits are longer. Those applicants "should expect to wait significantly longer for an appointment."

Canada shows what that can mean. On October 30, 2026, the US Mission to Canada's visa page said "Non-Canada resident applicants can anticipate wait times of approximately 600 calendar days for an appointment." The US Embassy in India's visa page carries the same country of nationality or residence instruction.

The waiver route doesn't help here either. The September 18, 2025 update says waiver applicants must apply in their country of nationality or usual residence.

So what are your options for H-1B stamping?

As of October 30, 2026, from the pages above:

Stamping inside the US (domestic renewal)The 2024 pilot took only certain H-1B renewals with visas from Canada or IndiaNo, but you had to qualify for a waiverClosed since April 1, 2024. No newer program on the State Department's site

Stamping in a third countryAnyone can book, though the State Department says to book in your country of nationality or residenceYes, in personAllowed to book, but the State Department warns of longer waits, harder cases and no refunds

For most H-1B workers, that leaves the standard route: a new DS-160, the fee, biometrics and an in-person interview at a US embassy or consulate in your home country. Our H-1B visa stamping guide walks through each step and the documents to bring.

Do you need a new H-1B stamp at all?

Only if you're traveling. The visa is what lets you come back to a US port of entry. The 2023 pilot notice described the problem it was trying to solve as H-1B workers who travel abroad and "risk being unable to immediately return if their visa is expired."

If you're staying in the US, there's nothing to stamp. If a trip is coming up and your visa has expired, or will before you return, ask your employer's immigration attorney how your petition, your status and your travel dates fit together. If your job ends while you're in the US, our H-1B 60-day grace period guide covers that case.

How do you plan a trip that needs H-1B stamping?

  • Book early and at home. Wait times differ by post. Check the State Department's wait times page and your home country's embassy site before you pick travel dates.
  • Don't buy tickets first. The India appointment service tells renewal applicants not to "buy a ticket or make firm travel plans" until they have the renewed visa.
  • Plan for a delay. An officer can ask for more documents or administrative processing under 221(g). See our 221(g) guide.
  • Get your papers in order with your employer: the approved petition, a current employment letter and anything that shows your role and pay.
  • Prepare for the interview. Be ready to talk about your job, your employer and your petition. See H-1B visa interview questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is stateside visa renewal open for H-1B workers?

Not as of October 30, 2026. The State Department's only domestic renewal pilot took applications from January 29 to April 1, 2024, its web page returned "Page Not Found" on October 30, 2026, and we found no newer announcement or Federal Register notice. Check the State Department's site for updates.

Can I use H-1B dropbox in 2026?

Generally no. Since October 1, 2025, the State Department's interview waiver exceptions cover B-1, B-2 and B1/B2 renewals and H-2A renewals, not H-1B. Plan for an in-person interview.

Can I get my H-1B stamped in Canada or Mexico?

You can book there, but the State Department says applicants should schedule in their country of nationality or residence. Outside it, it may be harder to qualify, waits are longer and fees aren't refunded. On October 30, 2026, the US Mission to Canada listed waits of about 600 calendar days for non-residents.

Who could use the 2024 domestic renewal pilot?

Only H-1B workers in the US whose previous H-1B visa was issued by Mission Canada from January 1, 2020, through April 1, 2023, or by Mission India from February 1, 2021, through September 30, 2021, and who met the other conditions, including qualifying for an interview waiver.

Could H-4 family members renew in the US?

Not in the 2024 pilot. Its Federal Register notice says H-4 dependents were left out. There's no domestic renewal program for H-1B or H-4 on the State Department's site as of October 30, 2026.

Do I need a valid H-1B stamp to keep working in the US?

The visa is for travel back into the US. The State Department's 2023 pilot notice described the risk as H-1B workers abroad being unable to return right away with an expired visa. For questions about your status, ask your employer's immigration attorney.
