H-1B visa stamping: the steps, the documents and what happens after the interview
H-1B stamping is getting the H-1B visa itself put in your passport at a US embassy or consulate abroad, after USCIS approves your employer's petition. In India it takes two appointments: fingerprints and a photo at a Visa Application Center, then a short interview at the embassy or a consulate. Since October 1, 2025, H-1B renewals generally need that interview too, and there is no current State Department program for stamping inside the US.
What is H-1B visa stamping?
"Stamping" is the everyday word for the H-1B visa foil a consular officer places in your passport. The visa lets you travel to a US port of entry and ask to be admitted. It isn't the same thing as your H-1B status.
H-1B status comes from USCIS. Your employer files Form I-129, and USCIS sends a Notice of Action, Form I-797, when it approves the petition. The State Department says you can apply for the visa only once the petition is approved, and that an approved petition doesn't promise a visa.
That split explains two things people often get wrong:
- You can be in valid H-1B status with an expired visa. The visa only matters when you travel back into the US. The US Mission in India's visa appointment service says a visa "is only for entry into the United States."
- Changing employers doesn't always mean new stamping. The same service says that if you changed H-1B employers through USCIS, you may keep using your valid H-1B visa from the old job, and you show your new I-797 when you enter.
What are the steps for H-1B stamping in India?
The State Department's temporary worker page and the US Mission in India's appointment service describe the same order. Here it is as one checklist, checked October 28, 2026:
| Step | What you do | Where | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Petition approved | Your employer gets the I-797 approval from USCIS | USCIS | You need the petition receipt number to book |
| 2. DS-160 | Fill in the online visa application and print the barcode page | ceac.state.gov | Answer in English, and keep the barcode number. It's needed to book |
| 3. Fee | Pay the visa application fee ($205 for H visas, paid in rupees) | Online, NEFT, UPI or listed banks | The fee receipt is valid for 365 days for booking |
| 4. Book two appointments | One at a Visa Application Center (VAC), then one for the interview | ustraveldocs.com/in | The VAC visit must be at least 2 business days before the interview |
| 5. VAC visit | Fingerprints and photo | One of five VACs (New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) | Under 14 and over 79 don't have to attend in person |
| 6. Interview | A short interview with a consular officer | Embassy in New Delhi or a consulate in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata | Everyone attends, children included |
| 7. Passport back | Pick up or delivery | The location you chose when booking | Home delivery is a paid option |
Book where you live. The US Mission in India says applicants should schedule in their country of residence or nationality. Its appointment service adds that anyone legally present in India may apply at any of the five posts, but should think about which consular district they can show the strongest ties to, not only which date is earliest.
You can reschedule only once. Since January 1, 2025, the India appointment service allows one reschedule. Miss the interview or change it a second time and you pay a new fee and book again.
Families can book together. The appointment service says a spouse and children can be added with the "Dependent" option, and it recommends that they interview at the same time as the H-1B worker. See H-4 visa interview questions for what they may be asked.
What documents do you need for H-1B stamping?
The State Department lists these for temporary worker visas, including H-1B (checked October 28, 2026):
- Passport valid at least six months beyond your stay, unless your country is exempt. The India appointment service also requires at least 15 days of validity from the appointment date.
- DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode used to book. If you corrected your DS-160 after booking on or after November 15, 2023, the US Mission in India says to bring both the original and the corrected confirmation pages.
- Visa fee receipt.
- Photo, only if your DS-160 upload failed.
- Petition receipt number from Form I-129 or Form I-797.
The State Department adds that your embassy may ask for more. Applicants often bring papers that answer the questions officers ask: the I-797 approval notice, a recent employment letter, recent pay stubs, degree certificates and, for client-site work, a client letter. That list is common practice, not a State Department requirement. Bring what fits your case, and know what each paper says.
Read the rights pamphlet. The State Department asks H-1B applicants to read the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet before applying.
Social media. The US Mission in India says H-1B applicants and H-4 dependents are instructed to set every social media account to "public" or "open." A State Department notice of September 18, 2026 confirms that H-1B and H-4 applicants were already covered by its online presence review.
How do the biometrics appointment and the interview work?
At the VAC. The India appointment service says biometrics, meaning fingerprints and a digital photo, are taken at the Visa Application Center. Bring your passport and appointment confirmation page. Phones and cameras aren't allowed inside, and most bags are restricted. Applicants under 14 or over 79 don't need to attend in person. A family member can submit their documents instead.
At the embassy or consulate. Everyone, including children under 14 and adults over 79, must attend the interview in person. Friends, relatives, attorneys and employers can't come in with you. The US Mission in India's security list bans electronic devices, smart watches, large bags, food, cosmetics, sealed envelopes and sharp objects, and there's nowhere to store them.
Language. The appointment service says Hindi and English are spoken at all five posts, and that interpretation in other common languages depends on availability. You can't bring your own translator.
What the officer decides. The State Department says the officer decides whether you're eligible and whether H-1B is the right category for what you'll do. Unlike visitors and students, H-1B applicants don't have to show ties to home under section 214(b). The officer is checking that the job is what the petition says it is. The questions follow from that, and our H-1B visa interview questions guide lists them with sample answers.
Can you skip the interview (dropbox) for H-1B stamping?
Generally no, as of October 28, 2026. The State Department's interview waiver update of September 18, 2025, in force since October 1, 2025, says nearly all nonimmigrant applicants need an in-person interview. The renewals it exempts are B-1, B-2 and B1/B2 visas and H-2A visas. H-1B and H-4 renewals aren't on the list.
The US Mission in India's renewal page matches. On October 28, 2026 it listed interview waiver only for renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 visa within 12 months of expiry (age 18 or older at issuance), plus diplomatic and certain government travelers.
Even when someone qualifies, the State Department says officers may still require an interview "for any reason." Our interview waiver guide has the full rules and the 2025 timeline.
Can you get H-1B stamping in the USA?
Not through any program we could find as of October 28, 2026. The State Department ran a pilot to renew certain H-1B visas inside the US. Its Federal Register notice says the pilot accepted applications from January 29 to April 1, 2024, and it was limited to applicants whose previous H-1B visa had been issued by Mission Canada or Mission India within set date ranges.
On October 28, 2026, the State Department's domestic renewal web page returned "Page Not Found," and a search of the Federal Register found no newer notice. So plan to get your H-1B visa at a US embassy or consulate abroad. If the State Department announces a new program, its temporary worker page is where to check.
What you can do inside the US doesn't need a visa. Extensions and employer changes go through USCIS, and the visa only matters the next time you travel.
What happens after the H-1B stamping interview?
There are three outcomes:
- Approved. The India appointment service says processing is typically seven to ten working days, though some cases take longer. You get an email and an SMS when your passport is ready at the pickup location you chose.
- 221(g). The officer needs more information or administrative processing. The State Department says you have one year from the refusal to send what's missing. In India, the appointment service says requested documents go to its document service, which passes them to the embassy. See our 221(g) guide.
- Refused. The officer tells you the section of law that applies. See our 214(b) refusal guide for the most common section, which works differently for H-1B.
The India appointment service says nobody can predict which cases need administrative processing or how long it takes. It suggests applying at least 6 to 8 weeks before you plan to travel and not booking flights until you have the visa.
When can you apply for stamping, and when can you travel?
The US Mission in India's appointment service gives these timing rules for H-1B:
- Apply up to 90 days before the start date on your I-797.
- Enter no earlier than 10 days before that start date, unless you already work in H-1B status for the same employer.
- Plan around wait times. We don't list appointment dates because they change constantly. The State Department's visa appointment wait times page shows the current estimate for each post.
How long the visa lasts. The Foreign Affairs Manual says H-1B status is generally limited to six years in total, with some exceptions. Visa validity follows your petition and your nationality, and the officer sets it.

Frequently asked questions
What is H-1B visa stamping?
It's getting the H-1B visa placed in your passport by a US embassy or consulate abroad, after USCIS approves your employer's petition. The visa lets you travel to the US and ask to be admitted.
Is dropbox available for H-1B stamping?
Generally no. Since October 1, 2025, the State Department's interview waiver exceptions cover B1/B2 and H-2A renewals, not H-1B. The US Mission in India's renewal page listed only B1/B2 renewals and diplomatic travelers on October 28, 2026.
Can I do H-1B stamping in the USA?
Not through any current program we could find. The 2024 State Department pilot accepted applications only from January 29 to April 1, 2024, and its web page was gone on October 28, 2026.
How many appointments are there for H-1B stamping in India?
Two. A Visa Application Center appointment for fingerprints and a photo, at least 2 business days before the interview, then the interview at the embassy or a consulate.
Can I do H-1B stamping at any consulate in India?
The appointment service says anyone legally present in India may apply in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. It also says to consider the district where you can show the strongest ties, not just the earliest date.
How early can I go for H-1B stamping?
Up to 90 days before the start date on your I-797, according to the US Mission in India's appointment service. You can enter the US no earlier than 10 days before that date unless you already work in H-1B status for the same employer.
How long after stamping do I get my passport?
The India appointment service says typically seven to ten working days if approved, though some cases take longer. Administrative processing under 221(g) takes longer and varies.
Do I need new stamping if I changed employers?
Not always. If you changed employers through USCIS and your old H-1B visa is still valid, the India appointment service says you can travel on it and show your new I-797 at entry.
