When can you renew Global Entry?

CBP's Global Entry FAQ says you become eligible to renew one year before your membership expires. Its pages for partner countries such as the UK, India and Japan put it at up to 364 days before the expiration date. CBP also emails a reminder to the address on your account before your membership expires.

Your expiration date may be your birthday. CBP's page for Indian citizens says membership starts on the day of final approval and lasts until your fifth birthday after that date. So your date can fall a few months before or after the five-year anniversary of your approval. Log in to TTP to see your own date before you plan around it.

Renew before the date, not after. CBP's 24-month rule only covers renewals submitted before your membership expires. Here is how the dates work out for a member whose Global Entry expires on March 15, 2027 (our example, using CBP's rules):

MilestoneExample dateRule behind it
Earliest day to submitMarch 16, 2026Up to 364 days before expiration
Last day to submit and keep benefitsBefore March 15, 2027The renewal must be in before membership expires
Latest day benefits continue while pendingMarch 15, 2029Up to 24 months after the expiration date
If you submit after March 15, 2027No carryoverCBP's 24-month answer doesn't cover late renewals

How do you renew Global Entry?

CBP's FAQ lists these steps for renewing in the TTP system:

  1. Log in at ttp.dhs.gov with your Login.gov account. If you don't have one, the site sends you to create it, then asks you to link your profile to your PASSID (membership number). It's on the back of your Trusted Traveler card or your approval letter.
  2. Select Renew in the Global Entry section of your dashboard and declare your citizenship.
  3. Pick the program. You can renew Global Entry or switch to another program you're eligible for, though CBP warns your benefits may change. Then acknowledge the program requirements.
  4. Update your information on the Membership Renewal pages: address, employment, travel and documents.
  5. Review and certify. On the Final Review page, select Confirm and Continue in each section, then Save and Continue. Answer "Do you certify?" and select Next.
  6. Pay. Check the box to agree that fees are non-refundable, select Pay Now, and you're returned to your dashboard.

After you pay, CBP says to check your TTP account periodically for any next steps. You'll get an email when your membership status changes.

Children renew free in some cases. Since October 1, 2024, CBP's fee for applicants under 18 is $0 when a parent or legal guardian is an enrolled member or has submitted a Trusted Traveler application that is pending or conditionally approved. Fees paid before that date weren't refunded.

Don't see a Renew button? Two things to check, both from CBP's renewal steps. Your TTP profile has to be linked to your PASSID, which you add on the profile page after signing in with Login.gov. And renewal only opens one year before your membership expires, so the button won't show earlier than that. Check your expiration date on the dashboard first.

Do you need an interview to renew Global Entry?

CBP says an interview for renewal may not be necessary. If one is needed, you're conditionally approved first, and your TTP account shows how to finish. There are four ways a renewal can end:

PathWho it's for, per CBPWhat to have ready
No interviewRenewals CBP approves without one. CBP doesn't publish how it decides.Nothing. Watch your email and TTP account.
Remote video interviewConditionally approved renewals for members 18 or older, with a CBP photo taken in the past 10 years and after age 14, and fingerprints already on fileAll current passports, proof of your home address and your permanent resident card if you have one. About 15 minutes on Zoom.
Enrollment on ArrivalConditionally approved applicants landing from an international flight at a participating airport. No appointment.Passports, proof of residency (not for minors) and your permanent resident card if you have one
Enrollment centerAnyone conditionally approved who books an appointment in TTPThe documents in our Global Entry interview guide

Remote interviews are booked from the "Scheduling Your Remote Interview" link on the TTP dashboard, and the virtual waiting room opens 15 minutes early. CBP suggests checking your email address with the Edit Profile link before you book, so the details reach you.

A renewal interview checks the same things as the first one: that your application is accurate and that nothing has changed. If you moved, changed jobs or had any arrest or customs issue since you joined, expect questions on it. Our Global Entry interview guide covers the questions and what officers verify, and Global Entry interview practice lets you rehearse them out loud.

How long does Global Entry renewal take?

CBP's How to Apply page says 80% of applications are approved within 2 weeks, while some take up to 12 months or longer. CBP doesn't publish a separate figure for renewals. Each family member submits their own application and, if an interview is needed, schedules their own.

If your renewal is still pending when your membership expires, the 24-month rule is what keeps you in the lanes, so submit early. If CBP denies it, our guide to Global Entry denials explains the reasons CBP lists and how to ask for reconsideration.

Renewing Global Entry on a US visa or a foreign passport

Most renewal guides are written for US citizens. If you hold another country's passport, these rules from CBP's partner country pages matter at renewal time:

  • New passport: update it yourself in TTP with Update Documents. If the new passport comes with a name change, CBP says to visit a Global Entry enrollment center.
  • New US visa or a name change: CBP's pages for the UK, Japan, India and Saudi Arabia say to tell CBP in person at an enrollment center, with no appointment needed.
  • Visa or ESTA still required: those pages say members need a valid passport and a valid visa (or an approved ESTA for UK and Japanese members) to use Global Entry when entering the US.
  • Indian citizens: CBP says vetting by the Government of India may take 6 months to 2 years. Processing time doesn't change your expiration date, so a late approval doesn't add time at the end.
  • UK and Japanese citizens: UK applicants get a UK Access Code from GOV.UK before applying, and Japanese applicants send a koseki to Japan's Immigration Services Agency within 30 days of getting a PASSID. CBP's pages describe these steps for applying and don't say if a renewal repeats them, so follow what your TTP account asks.

If your Global Entry renewal lines up with a new US visa, our visa document checklist lists what to bring to that visa interview. For what Global Entry covers and who can join, see the Global Entry overview.

Your Global Entry card after renewal

You don't need a card to use Global Entry at an airport, where you use your passport or permanent resident card. CBP says the card is only needed for the SENTRI and NEXUS lanes when entering the US by land or sea, and only US citizens, US permanent residents and Mexican nationals get one.

CBP mails cards to your US address. Activate a new card in your TTP account within 30 days of getting it, or it won't work in the Trusted Traveler lanes. A replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged card costs $25.

Thinking of switching to NEXUS when you renew? CBP lets you pick another program at the Select step, and NEXUS adds a Canada interview. Our NEXUS renewal guide and NEXUS interview guide cover that route.

Frequently asked questions

How early can I renew Global Entry?

CBP says you can renew one year before your membership expires, and its partner country pages say up to 364 days before. CBP emails a reminder to the address on your account before the expiration date.

Can I still use Global Entry while my renewal is pending?

Yes, if you submitted the renewal before your membership expired. CBP says you can keep using the benefits for up to 24 months after the expiration date. CBP lists TSA PreCheck among Global Entry's benefits.

What if my Global Entry already expired?

Renew as soon as you can. CBP's 24-month rule only covers renewals submitted before the expiration date, so a late renewal doesn't carry your benefits over while it's pending.

How much does it cost to renew Global Entry?

$120, non-refundable, as of October 31, 2026, per CBP. Applicants under 18 pay $0 when a parent or legal guardian is a member or has an application pending or conditionally approved.

Do I need an interview to renew Global Entry?

Not always. CBP says a renewal interview may not be necessary. If you're conditionally approved, you finish with a remote video interview if you qualify, Enrollment on Arrival, or an enrollment center appointment.

How long does Global Entry renewal take?

CBP says 80% of applications are approved within 2 weeks and some take 12 months or longer. It doesn't publish a separate figure for renewals.

Will I get a new Global Entry card when I renew?

Only US citizens, US permanent residents and Mexican nationals get cards. You don't need one at airports. If a new card arrives, activate it in TTP within 30 days to use it in NEXUS or SENTRI lanes.

Do I have to update my passport before I renew?

You can update a new passport yourself in TTP with Update Documents, before or after you renew. A passport with a name change means a visit to an enrollment center, and CBP's partner country pages say the same for a new US visa.
