NEXUS renewal: when to apply, and whether you need an interview
You renew NEXUS online in your Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account, and CBP and CBSA ask members to start 364 days before the membership expires. CBSA says that if you renew before the expiry date, you can keep your NEXUS privileges. You may not need an interview: generally you don't if nothing has changed in your personal information and there's no new information that may affect your eligibility.
The renewal fee is $120 (USD), non-refundable, as of October 30, 2026. If an interview is required, your TTP account tells you after conditional approval.
When should you renew NEXUS?
CBP and CBSA ask NEXUS members to begin the renewal 364 days before the membership expiration date. Membership lasts 5 years, and a renewal makes it valid for another 5.
Check the expiry date on your NEXUS card. CBSA says to contact it if your card has no expiry date.
Renewing isn't automatic approval. To stay in the program, CBP says a member must:
- submit an application and go through a registration process
- satisfy the eligibility criteria
- be admissible to Canada and the United States
- pass risk assessments by both countries
How do you renew NEXUS in the TTP system?
You renew and pay in the TTP system, which CBP operates. CBSA and CBP's Trusted Traveler FAQ describe the steps:
- Sign in to the TTP website with your Login.gov account. If your profile isn't linked to your membership yet, CBP says to link it with your PASSID (membership number), found on the back of your card or on your approval letter.
- Select Renew in the NEXUS section of your dashboard. CBP says you may choose another program you're eligible for instead, but your benefits may change.
- Review and update each section of the application, then certify it.
- Pay the fee. CBP says fees are for application processing and are non-refundable.
- Watch your TTP account. CBP says to check it periodically for the steps needed to finish, and you'll get an email when your membership status changes.
Fee. $120 (USD), non-refundable, as of October 30, 2026, per CBSA and CBP. CBSA says members under 18 pay no fee if a parent or legal guardian is also applying or is already a NEXUS member. CBP says children under 18 must also apply.
Do you need an interview to renew NEXUS?
Not always. CBSA says that with the streamlined renewal process, you may not need an interview at an enrollment center. Generally, you don't need one if there are no changes to your personal information or new information that may affect your eligibility.
CBP says that when a conditional approval letter appears in your TTP account, you schedule an interview to complete the process "if required." Your TTP account is where you find out.
Changes that need an in-person visit. CBSA says you must go to an enrollment center to update information that may affect your NEXUS eligibility, such as:
- an arrest
- a criminal charge
- a conviction
- a customs or immigration violation in Canada or the US
- a change in passport information
- a change in citizenship documents
If one of these happened since your last interview, be ready to explain it with dates and outcomes. Officers review your application to make sure it's still valid. Our NEXUS interview guide covers the questions they ask and the documents to bring.
How does a NEXUS renewal interview work?
CBSA's interview page doesn't split first-time and renewing members. A CBSA officer and a CBP officer each do their part, and CBSA lists three ways to do the interview:
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Joint interview | CBSA and CBP officers together at a land enrollment center in the US, booked in TTP |
| Split interview | First part at a land enrollment center, second part across the border the same day, at Lansdowne and Alexandria Bay, Fort Erie and Buffalo (Peace Bridge), or Derby Line and Stanstead |
| Two-step airport interview | Canadian part booked at one of eight Canadian airport enrollment centers. US part with no appointment at US Preclearance in a Canadian airport or with Enrollment on Arrival at a participating US airport |
Enrollment on Arrival. CBP says all conditionally approved NEXUS applicants can do the CBP part through Enrollment on Arrival at any participating US airport or Preclearance location, before or after the CBSA part. CBSA says no appointment is needed: tell a CBP officer you want to complete your NEXUS interview. At Preclearance it's first come, first served, so CBP suggests arriving early and during the published hours. If you start at an airport, CBSA says you can't finish at a land enrollment center.
Remote video interview. CBP runs remote renewal interviews on Zoom with a CBP officer. Its page, last updated January 3, 2025, says some conditionally approved Global Entry renewals can use it now, and renewing NEXUS members are being added in phases. To be eligible, CBP says you must:
- be conditionally approved for a renewal
- be at least 18 years old
- have a photo on file with CBP taken within the past 10 years and after you turned 14
- have given fingerprints to CBP before
Eligible members schedule it from the "Scheduling Your Remote Interview" link on the TTP dashboard. CBP says it takes about 15 minutes, and you should have your passports, proof of residency and permanent resident card (if you have one) ready. CBP's page describes its own officer's interview only. Our Global Entry interview guide covers how the video call runs.
What happens if NEXUS expires while your renewal is pending?
CBSA says that if you renew your membership before the expiry date, you can retain your NEXUS privileges. That's the reason to submit early, even with an interview still ahead of you.
CBSA's renewal page doesn't give an end date for that. Your TTP account shows your status, and CBP emails you when it changes.
The 24 months you may have read about comes from CBP's Global Entry renewal answer. Neither the CBP nor the CBSA NEXUS renewal page gives a NEXUS figure.
How long does NEXUS renewal take?
CBSA says renewal applications may be processed within 30 days. That estimate only covers properly completed applications, and it doesn't include postal delivery or the time to schedule an interview.
If you do interview, CBSA says approved applicants can expect their card within 4 to 6 weeks. CBSA's deadlines for scheduling an interview after conditional approval change on April 1, 2027, and our NEXUS interview guide lists them.
How is NEXUS renewal different from Global Entry renewal?
| NEXUS | Global Entry | |
|---|---|---|
| Who approves the renewal | CBSA and CBP, after risk assessments by both countries | CBP |
| When to start | CBP and CBSA ask members to begin 364 days before expiry | Eligible one year before expiration, per CBP |
| If expiry comes first | Renew before the expiry date to retain your privileges, per CBSA | Benefits for up to 24 months after expiration if you renew before it, per CBP |
| Interview | Generally not needed if nothing has changed, per CBSA | "May not be necessary," per CBP |
| Remote video interview | Renewing members being added in phases, per CBP's January 2025 page | Open to some conditionally approved renewing members |
What should you check before renewing NEXUS?
- Your card's expiry date, and the date 364 days before it.
- Your TTP sign-in. Login.gov access and your PASSID.
- Every section of your application, which you review and certify before you pay.
- Anything that changed since your last interview, like an arrest, charge, conviction or customs violation, with dates and outcomes.
- A new passport or citizenship document, which CBSA says must be updated in person at an enrollment center.
- Your children's renewals. CBP says children under 18 must also apply.
NEXUS members can still be inspected any time they enter Canada or the United States. Our guides to what CBSA officers ask when you enter Canada and what CBP officers ask at the US border cover those questions.
If your renewal needs an interview, you can rehearse it out loud first with NEXUS interview practice, or see how Visaful's NEXUS mode works.
