K-1 visa processing time: every stage, and where to see your real wait

K-1 processing has three stages: USCIS decides the Form I-129F petition, the National Visa Center sends it to the embassy, and the embassy interviews your fiancé(e). USCIS doesn't publish one number for the whole K-1 visa processing time. On October 31, 2026, its processing times tool showed that 80% of I-129F petitions were completed within 13 months, and the interview wait after that depends on the embassy. The rest of the timeline follows deadlines you can plan around.

Those deadlines, from USCIS and State Department rules checked on October 31, 2026: an approved petition is valid for 4 months, a K-1 visa for up to 6 months, and you must marry within 90 days of entry.

What are the K-1 visa stages?

StageWho handles itWhat happensWhere to check the time
1. PetitionUSCISThe US citizen files Form I-129F at the USCIS Dallas lockbox. USCIS may send a request for evidence, then approves or denies.USCIS processing times tool for Form I-129F, and your receipt number in USCIS case status
2. TransferNational Visa Center (NVC)USCIS sends the approved petition to the NVC, which forwards it to the embassy or consulate where your fiancé(e) will apply, generally where they live. The case number the embassy or NVC gives you
3. Visa applicationUS embassy or consulateYour fiancé(e) completes the DS-160, the medical exam and the documents, then interviews. The embassy tells you when the interview is scheduled. The CEAC status check, which the Japan embassy says K visa applicants use with their case number, and the embassy's own wait information
4. EntryCBPYour fiancé(e) travels while the visa is valid and asks for admission at a US port of entry.Fixed by the visa's validity
5. After entryYou, then USCISYou marry within 90 days. Then your spouse can file Form I-485 for a green card.USCIS processing times for Form I-485

At every stage, USCIS says background and security checks may run on both of you, using fingerprints, names and other information.

How long does the I-129F take at USCIS?

Check the USCIS processing times tool at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times, choose Form I-129F, and read the time it shows that day. On October 31, 2026 it showed 13 months for Form I-129F at Service Center Operations, meaning 80% of cases decided over the past six months were completed within that time. USCIS updates it, and third-party ranges often mix different measures, so check it again when you file.

  • Premium processing isn't an option. USCIS offers it only for Forms I-129, I-140, I-765 and I-539, so Form I-129F can't be sped up with a fee.
  • Avoid a rejection. USCIS rejects a form with missing required fields or pages from different editions. The current I-129F edition is 01/20/25.
  • Answer a request for evidence quickly. USCIS says it may send one if it needs more documents, and the petition waits until you respond.
  • Fee: $675 for Form I-129F as of October 31, 2026, per USCIS Form G-1055.

USCIS also needs proof you're eligible: you're a US citizen, you're both free to marry, you intend to marry within 90 days of entry, and you met in person in the 2 years before filing, unless USCIS waives that for extreme hardship or strict cultural custom.

How long from I-129F approval to the interview?

The State Department doesn't publish a fixed time for the NVC transfer or for K-1 interview scheduling. What it does publish are the steps the embassy needs before it can interview your fiancé(e). Under 9 FAM 502.7, the embassy sends instructions for the DS-160, and the application needs:

  • Form DS-160 and a valid passport
  • a birth certificate
  • police certificates, if obtainable, for applicants 16 and older
  • the medical exam report from a panel physician
  • evidence of support, since K applicants must meet the public charge rule (the FAM says the officer may ask for Form I-134 when useful, but it isn't always required)

Each K-2 child needs their own DS-160, a passport (or a place in the parent's passport), a birth certificate and a medical exam. Having everything ready when the embassy calls is the part of the wait you control. Our K-1 visa interview questions guide lists what to bring and what the officer asks.

For a sense of how busy your fiancé(e)'s consulate is, our visa wait time checker shows the State Department's current appointment waits by post. Those figures cover visitor, student, work and transit visas, not K-1, so treat them as a guide to the post's workload, not a K-1 date.

What can stretch the embassy stage?

  • No case number until the NVC forwards it. The US Embassy in Japan, for example, says the case number for its CEAC status check is assigned only after USCIS approves the petition and sends it to the NVC.
  • Administrative processing after the interview. The US Consulate General in Bermuda says most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days of the interview, but timing varies by case.
  • Asking about a pending case. Embassies set their own inquiry rules. Tokyo, for example, asks K visa applicants to wait 10 business days after the interview before sending an online inquiry.
  • An expiring petition. If the interview falls after the 4 months run out, the consular officer can revalidate the petition (see the table below), so an expired approval date alone doesn't end the case.

What deadlines can add time to a K-1 case?

DeadlineThe ruleSource
Petition validityAn approved I-129F is valid for 4 months. A consular officer can revalidate it for more 4-month periods if you're still free to marry and still intend to marry within 90 days of entry.8 CFR 214.2(k)(5) and 9 FAM 502.7
Visa validityA K-1 visa is valid for up to 6 months, for a single entry.USCIS
MarriageYou must marry within 90 days of admission. K-1 and K-2 status expires after 90 days and can't be extended.USCIS
K-2 childrenChildren must stay unmarried and under 21 to be admitted as K-2. They can travel with your fiancé(e) or later, but not before.USCIS

A worked example (our dates, using those rules). USCIS approves the petition on March 1, 2027, so it's valid until July 1, 2027 unless the consulate revalidates it. The visa is issued on June 10, 2027 and is valid for up to 6 months. Your fiancé(e) enters on August 15, 2027, so the 90 days to marry run to November 13, 2027.

If the officer doesn't approve. USCIS says that if the consular officer finds the relationship isn't bona fide, the State Department returns the petition to USCIS instead of issuing the visa. If it returns after the petition has expired, USCIS generally lets it stay expired, and you can file a new I-129F. A case can also be held for documents or administrative processing under 221(g), which our 221(g) guide explains.

What happens after your fiancé(e) arrives?

  • Entry isn't automatic. USCIS says a CBP officer at the port of entry makes the final decision on admission. Our guide to US border questions covers that inspection.
  • Work. Your fiancé(e) can apply for work authorization on Form I-765 right after entry, valid only for 90 days after entry. Filed with Form I-485 after the wedding, it's valid for a year and can be extended.
  • Missing the 90 days. K-1 and K-2 status can't be extended. If you marry after day 90, USCIS says the US citizen may file Form I-130 instead of the K-1 route to a green card.
  • Green card. After you marry within 90 days, your spouse files Form I-485. If you've been married less than two years when it's approved, USCIS grants a 2-year conditional green card.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a K-1 visa take?

USCIS doesn't publish one figure for the whole process. Its tool showed 13 months for Form I-129F on October 31, 2026 (80% of cases completed within that time). Check it again for today's figure, then add the NVC transfer and your embassy's interview wait. Having the DS-160, medical exam and documents ready keeps the embassy stage short.

Can I pay for premium processing on a K-1 petition?

No. Form I-129F isn't among the forms USCIS lists for premium processing.

How long is an approved I-129F valid?

4 months from approval. A consular officer can revalidate it for more 4-month periods if you're still free to marry and still plan to marry within 90 days of entry.

How long is a K-1 visa valid?

Up to 6 months, for one entry. After your fiancé(e) is admitted, you have 90 days to marry, and K-1 status can't be extended.

How do I check K-1 visa status after approval?

Use your USCIS receipt number for the petition stage. After the case reaches the embassy, the Japan embassy says K visa applicants check their status on CEAC with their case number, alongside immigrant visa applicants, even though the K-1 is a nonimmigrant visa. Our CEAC status guide explains each status.

How long does administrative processing take after a K-1 interview?

There's no fixed time. The US Consulate General in Bermuda says most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days of the interview, and the rest depends on the case. Our 221(g) guide explains what the refusal sheet means.

What happens if we marry after the 90 days?

K-1 status ends at 90 days and can't be extended. USCIS says that if you marry after that, the US citizen may file Form I-130 for their spouse instead.

How much does the K-1 process cost?

As of October 31, 2026, $675 for Form I-129F and a $265 visa application fee per person, plus the panel physician's medical exam fee.
