The visa interview in India

The officer decides at a short interview. Here's what the US Mission in India and the State Department say about the day and about refusals.

What happens

  1. 1You file the DS-160 online, then book a Visa Application Center (VAC) visit and an interview at the embassy or a consulate.
  2. 2If you corrected your DS-160 after booking (appointments booked on or after November 15, 2023), bring both the original and the corrected confirmation pages to the VAC.
  3. 3F, M, J, H-1B and several other applicants are told to set every social media account to public before they apply.
  4. 4You can ask for an earlier, expedited appointment only once you have a confirmed date. The US Mission says expedited slots are very limited.
  5. 5At the interview the officer looks at your circumstances, travel plans, finances and ties outside the US, one applicant at a time.

Why US visas are refused

  • 214(b): you didn't show you qualify for the visa, or didn't overcome the presumption that you intend to immigrate. Strong ties at home are things like your job, your home and your family.
  • 221(g): the officer needs a missing document or more processing time. It isn't a final refusal, and you have one year to send what's asked.
  • Misrepresentation (212(a)(6)(C)(i)): lying about a material fact or using fake documents is a permanent ineligibility.
  • Coached answers: the US Mission in India warns that consultants have sold fake financial packages and told parents to lie, and those applicants were found permanently ineligible. Clients of one consultant can also sound exactly alike, which hurts their credibility.
  • There's no appeal for a 214(b) refusal. You can reapply with a new application and fee, best with new information or a real change in your circumstances.
