US visa interview in India: the two appointments, the five posts and the rules that matter

A US visa interview in India means two appointments: first a visit to a Visa Application Center (VAC) for fingerprints and a photo, then the interview itself at the US Embassy in New Delhi or a consulate in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. The VAC visit has to be at least 2 business days before the interview. Everyone attends the interview in person, children under 14 included, and since January 2025 you can reschedule only once.

How does the US visa process work in India?

The US visa process in India follows the same five steps for most nonimmigrant visas, according to the US Mission in India's appointment service (checked October 28, 2026):

  1. Fill in the DS-160 online and print the barcode page. Each applicant, including each child, needs their own.
  2. Pay the visa fee. Fees are listed in US dollars but paid in rupees, by NEFT, UPI or cash at the listed banks. The fee receipt is valid for 365 days for booking an appointment.
  3. Book two appointments at ustraveldocs.com/in: one at a VAC and one for the interview, at least 2 business days apart.
  4. Go to the VAC for fingerprints and a photo.
  5. Attend the interview at the embassy or consulate.

The exchange rate is set by the consulates. The US Mission in India said the consular exchange rate changed from 96 to 98 rupees per dollar as of May 25, 2026. Check the current rate before you pay.

Rescheduling is limited. Since January 1, 2025, the appointment service allows one reschedule. If you miss your interview or need a second change, you pay a new fee and book again.

Booking with family. A spouse, children, parents, siblings and grandparents can book together with the "Dependent" option. Friends traveling for the same reason book separately.

Expedited appointments. You can ask for an earlier date only once you already have a confirmed appointment. The US Mission in India says expedited slots are very limited, and you shouldn't cancel your existing appointment unless the request is approved.

Where should you apply in India?

The US Mission in India says nonimmigrant applicants should book at the US embassy or consulate in their country of residence or nationality. Its appointment service adds two practical rules (checked October 28, 2026):

  • Any of the five posts is allowed for anyone legally present in India, but the service says to think about which consular district you can show the strongest ties to, not only which date is earliest.
  • Your DS-160 post can differ from your booking. The post you pick at the start of the DS-160 can be different from where you book, as long as both are in India.

What are the five US visa posts in India?

India has one US embassy and four consulates that interview visa applicants. The table shows what each post's own page says about itself. Where a post's page doesn't say something, we've left it blank rather than guess.

Language at every post. The appointment service says Hindi and English are spoken at all five posts. Interpretation in other common Indian languages depends on availability, and you can't bring your own translator. Applicants who need an interpreter are encouraged to apply at the post closest to where their language is spoken.

Videos for first-timers. The US Mission in India's visa page has short videos on the steps in New Delhi and Kolkata, and on getting to the VAC and the interview in Hyderabad.

What happens at the VAC biometrics appointment?

The VAC appointment in India is where your fingerprints and digital photo are taken. It isn't an interview. Bring (checked October 28, 2026):

  • Your passport, valid at least six months beyond your stay. The appointment service also requires at least 15 days of validity from the appointment date.
  • Your appointment confirmation page.
  • Your DS-160 confirmation page.
  • One printed photo for applicants under 14.

If you corrected your DS-160 after booking. For appointments booked on or after November 15, 2023, the US Mission in India says to bring both the original and the corrected confirmation pages. Without both, you must cancel and rebook with the new DS-160 number.

What's restricted at the VAC. The appointment service says phones and cameras are prohibited, and bags such as backpacks, briefcases, smart watches and flash drives are restricted by security.

Who can skip the VAC visit. Applicants under 14 or over 79 don't have to attend in person. A family member or representative can submit their documents at the scheduled time. Our OFC appointment guide covers this visit in full, including rescheduling and what happens if you miss it.

What happens on interview day in India?

On interview day in India, you go to the embassy or consulate you booked. The visa sections interview by appointment only, and there's no walk-in information window.

You go in alone. The appointment service says friends, relatives, attorneys and business contacts can't attend your interview.

What to leave at home. The US Mission in India's security list bans electronic devices (phones, smart watches, smart rings, smart glasses, key fobs, laptops, flash drives), large bags and backpacks, food and drink, cosmetics, sealed envelopes, lighters and cigarettes, sharp objects, and umbrellas longer than 40 cm. There's nowhere to store them. Only hand-carried bags such as unsealed plastic bags or zip folders with your papers are allowed.

Medical devices. If you need one inside the consular section, the US Mission in India says to bring a hard-copy original letter from a medical professional. Without it, you may be turned away and rescheduled.

Accommodations. You can ask for a reasonable accommodation, such as a quieter appointment for a child with special needs, as soon as you book.

The day's general rules, such as what to wear and how long to plan for, are in our US visa interview tips.

Can you skip the interview in India (dropbox)?

Only for a few cases, as of October 28, 2026. The US Mission in India's renewal page lists interview waiver (often called "dropbox") for:

  • B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 renewals where the old visa was full validity, is still valid or expired within the past 12 months, and you were 18 or older when it was issued.
  • Diplomatic and certain government travelers.

You also need to apply in your consular district of residence, have given all 10 fingerprints for your last visa, have a previous visa that wasn't lost, stolen or revoked, and have no refusals unless they were overcome.

H-1B, H-4, F-1 and other renewals aren't on the list, which matches the State Department's September 18, 2025 update. See our interview waiver guide for the full background.

How dropbox works in India. You book an interview waiver appointment and drop off your passport and documents at one of eleven locations: five VACs plus six document drop-off centers. You must be in India when you submit. The appointment service says to allow up to three weeks for processing and that it can't be expedited. An officer can still call you in for an interview.

Do children under 14 need a visa interview in India?

Yes, as of October 28, 2026. The appointment service says all applicants, including those under 14 or over 79, must appear in person for the interview at the embassy or consulate.

The difference is the VAC visit. Children under 14 and adults over 79 don't have to go to the VAC in person, and a parent or representative can submit their documents there instead, with one printed photo for a child under 14.

This changed in 2025. The State Department's interview waiver update, in force since October 1, 2025, ended the general waiver for children under 14 and adults over 79.

What do officers ask in India?

US visa interview questions in India depend on your visa, not on the city. No post publishes its own question list, and the officer's job is the same in New Delhi as in Chennai. Searches like "US visa interview experiences Delhi" mostly lead to forum stories, which vary from one applicant to the next.

What does stand out in India-based reports in Visaful's question bank:

A warning from the US Mission in India about coaching. Its visa consultants page says that clients of the same consultant can end up sounding "exactly like one another," which hurts the credibility of applicants who memorize the "correct" answers and can't hold a free-flowing conversation. It also warns that some consultants sell students fake financial packages or tell parents to lie about their other children, and that applicants have been found permanently ineligible as a result.

Social media. The US Mission in India says applicants for F, J, H-1B, H-4 and several other visas are instructed to set every social media account to "public."

What happens after the interview?

After a US visa interview in India, there are three outcomes (checked October 28, 2026):

  • Approved. The appointment service says processing is typically seven to ten working days, though individual cases vary. You get an email and an SMS when your passport is ready at the pickup location you chose. Home delivery anywhere in India is a premium option, listed at ₹1,500 including taxes.
  • 221(g). You get a handout explaining what's needed. If you're asked for documents, the appointment service says to submit them to its document service, which delivers them to the embassy. You can follow your case on the State Department's CEAC status page using your barcode or case number and interview location. See our 221(g) guide.
  • Refused. The officer tells you the section of law. The US Mission in India says applicants shouldn't reapply unless their circumstances or information have significantly changed. See our 214(b) refusal guide.

Timing your travel. The appointment service suggests applying at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel and not booking flights or hotels until you have the visa. Students can be issued a visa up to 365 days before their I-20 start date.

Frequently asked questions

How many appointments are there for a US visa in India?

Two for most applicants: a VAC appointment for fingerprints and a photo, then the interview at the embassy or a consulate, at least 2 business days later. Dropbox renewals use a single document drop-off appointment instead.

Can I give my US visa interview in a different city in India?

Yes. The appointment service says anyone legally present in India may apply at any of the five posts. It suggests choosing based on where you can show the strongest ties, not only on the earliest date.

Do children under 14 need to attend the US visa interview in India?

Yes. Since 2025, all applicants, including those under 14 and over 79, must attend the interview in person. They don't have to attend the VAC appointment.

Can I take my phone to the US consulate in India?

No. Phones, smart watches and other electronic devices aren't allowed at the embassy, the consulates or the VACs, and there's nowhere to store them.

Is dropbox available in India?

For B1/B2 renewals that meet the conditions, and for diplomatic travelers, as of October 28, 2026. H-1B, F-1 and other renewals need an interview.

Can I reschedule my US visa appointment in India?

Once. Since January 1, 2025, a second change or a missed interview means paying a new fee and booking again.

Can my family come with me to the interview?

Family members who are applying can book together with the "Dependent" option. People who aren't applying, including relatives, attorneys and employers, can't attend your interview.

How long after the interview do I get my passport in India?

The appointment service says processing is typically seven to ten working days if approved, though some cases take longer, especially after a 221(g).
